A big big thanks goes out to Ryan Deahl and Kyle Guzman of tillikillit for leading the Windy City Riot media effort. They put together this three part piece that documented the contest more professionally and more thoroughly than any other street contest has ever been documented.

The Windy City Riot planning this year was more troublesome than ever. We needed to quickcrete a variety of spots. The planned last spot was found to be completely unskateable just a few days before the contest so we were hard pressed to find a replacement. We decided to use Crete (blue mellow downrail) as the last spot (spot 4) but when spot 3 was unexpectedly also unskateable and we got busted at spot 4 (which is usually bust free), we had an interesting situation on our hands. The police officer that kicked us out of Crete told us about a skatepark that was literally next door. Unfortunately, it was just about the smallest skatepark one could imagine. We all put our heads together and ended up creating a launch to soccer goal to use as the last spot. That was when the contest really went off. Kruise Sapstein ended up prevailing by popular vote through a live text poll. The awards ceremony was held at a campground at which we all camped after the contest.

Congratulations to Kruise Sapstein, Michael Froemling, Jeph Howard, Logan Clark, PJ Piencak, Sean Darst, Brian Bruno, Peter Curi and Steve Matiasec for killing it at the Riot this year. I want to thank Ryan Deahl, Ryan McDermott and Kyle Guzman first and foremost. The Riot wouldn’t have been a success this year without their help. Thank you guys! Grind Gear was the greatest sponsor a contest could ask for this year. All of us in Chicago and everyone who came to the Riot would like to thank Ray from Grind Gear for being our presenting sponsor and the primary reason we were able to give $1,000 to Kruise. Your checklist:

• You must have a car to drive from spot to spot. Arrive at the meeting spot with a full tank of gas. We have some driving to do. Total it will be about 2 hours.
• If possible, please try not to complain. Just get your blade on.
  Bring cash and your ID. WCR merchandise, registration and the camping fee are cash only. You’ll need your ID if you pre-registered and there are bars near the campground.
• Bring your cell phone and be sure you are on the WCR Text Message Update list so that you can be informed of spots and directions. Submit a spectator registration form to be added to this list.
• Bring extra food and liquid because you may not have time to stop.
• Bring camping gear such as a tent, flashlight, sleeping bag, air mattress, pillow, hammer, towel, tooth brush etc… If the contest is delayed, you may need to set up camp after dark so a flashlight would be very helpful in doing so.
• Park in legal parking spaces. Be wary of lots with only one exit.
• Don’t talk trash to the cops when they come. Just shut your mouth and move on to the next spot. No body knows anything about anything.
• Recommend that your girlfriend brings an umbrella and a sweatshirt. This event is going down whether it is rain or shine, 15 or 110 degrees.
• Don’t leave your iPod or anything of any value laying around, especially the meeting spot and camp ground. Too many rollerbladers have proven themselves to be thieves.
• Bring extra skate parts because you’ll be the one guy to break an axle that nobody else has.

Details:  This is bank under a highway bridge that you will drop into and then ride up another side to a down ledge.
Directions:  From the meeting spot, head S on Halsted (1.4 mi) | Go under a bridge then R onto Archer {SL} to head southwest (1.7 mi) | Go under the highway then hard R onto Loomis {SL} | The spot is under the bridge on your right |  Continue past the spot and find parking on the nearby side streets.

Blue Island Banks

Details: The banks in Blue Island are at a bank in the middle of the city. There are highway guard rails at the top of the banks. If all goes well, we will have PVC mounted on the top of the guard rails. The ground here is very rough. Try to find legal street parking. Otherwise, consider parking in the Metra Lots nearby however you can be easily blocked into these lots.
Directions:  Head S on Loomis (0.3mi) | Come to T and go L onto 31st Street {SS} to head E (1.2mi) | R onto Wentworth {SL} to immediately merge onto I-90/I-94 E (8.3mi) | While on the highway, follow signs for I-94 E (express and local lanes are both ok to use) | Then stay right and take I-57 south | Take exit 353 towards 127th St./Burr Oak | Go straight at the {SL} to continue S on Paulina (0.4mi) |  Come to T and go R onto Vermont {SS} to head W (0.8mi) | Go over the train tracks and immediately go R onto Irving {NR} to head N (0.1mi) |  The spot is two blocks down on your left. Park in the lots at the base of the hill.  Don’t park in the bank lot.

Details: Use this time to eat, rest, travel towards the next spot and anything else you can think of. The exact meeting time at Spot 3 will be determined on the fly. Under no circumstances should anyone skate Spot 3 before this time. If you skate this spot during the break, you will likely make it so that the contest cannot take place at Spot 3. Put it this way, you are found skating Spot 3 before you’re supposed to, you’ll be Blue Wallaced.

Details: This is a 16 stair rail with three rails down one set (one on each side and one in the middle).  The rail is a little bit fatter than your typical rail.  You land and will likely roll into the street so be careful of cars.
Directions:  Head N on Irving (0.4) | Go R on Burr Oak {SS} to head E (0.7) | R at Paulina {SL} and immediately merge onto I-57 S (12.5mi) | Take exit 340A for US-30 E / 211th St / E Lincoln Hwy to head E (4.8mi) | L at Chicago {SL} to head N (0.5mi) | The school will be on your left.  Park in the lot across the street from the rails or on the side street just past the rails.

Spot 4

Crete Monee High School

Details: This is a mellow rail (between the steepness of a handicap and a stair rail) about 25 feet long on the right side. There are other rails at this spot as well as a wall ride and bank to fence for those who’d like to get a little tech. Park in the lot at the bottom of the rails but don’t park anywhere near the rails so that people can land and not have to worry about hitting cars.
Directions:  Head S on Chicago (3.8mi) | R onto Exchange {SL} to head W (0.6mi) | L onto Sangamon {NR} to head S (0.2mi) | The rails will be on your right.  Park in the lot by the rails but do not park at the base of any the rails.

Details: The cost of camping at Enchanted Shores is $20 per tent (includes two adults and 4 children under 18) and $5 for each additional person. Cash only. You do not need to reserve a spot at this camp ground. You get your space when you arrive. Say “I’m with everybody”. They’ll know. This campground is more of a trailer park than a camp ground. The reason we’re camping at this location is because it is the cheapest, closest campground to Chicago that seemed to be remotely understanding to our purposes. Alcohol is allowed but you may think that trees were not. There is very little greenery on this camp ground. You will basically be camping in an open field. There are private showers and firepits (bring your own wood or buy a bundle on-site for $5). There is a gas station back at the exit on the highway where you can buy water, alcohol, snacks, etc… Feel free to call the number above for more information. The manager of the grounds name is Don. He’s a great guy. He will be great to us as long as we’re respectful to him. He says quiet time is after 10pm but made it sound like he’s flexible about this. There is a pavilion on the edge of the campground you can hang out in where you won’t be as much of a disturbance.
Directions: Head S on Sangamon (1.4mi) | Come to T and go R onto Crete-Monee / HWY 21 {SS} to head W (4.5mi) | Go through beautiful downtown Monee | Bare R at the fork and merge onto Egyptian Trail {SS} to head N (0.4mi) | L at Monee Manhatten {SS} to head W (0.7mi) | L to merge onto I-57 S (7.8mi) | Take exit 327 for Wilmington/Peotone Rd. | Turn R onto Wilmington/Peotone Rd to head W (3.0mi) | The campground will be on your right (N side of the street) and will be easy to miss.  There is a small sign.  Pull down the drive way and check in first thing at the trailer that says Office.
